Deebo Samuel Returns to 49ers on One-Year Deal Worth Up to $7 Million
Samuel, traded away last year after requesting a move, is back in San Francisco: 'It was just a matter of time before it happened.'
Deebo Samuel is back with the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year contract worth up to $7 million, a little more than a year after the team traded him to the Washington Commanders at his own request. "It was just a matter of time before it happened," Samuel said of the reunion.
How did this come together?
Samuel signed as a free agent Friday, with agent Tory Dandy of Athletes First brokering the deal. Samuel said his relationship with the 49ers never really soured despite the trade request. "Conversations with me, John and Kyle have just always kind of been the same," he said, referring to general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan.
What did he do in Washington?
Samuel posted 72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns through the air in 2025, adding 75 yards and a rushing score on 17 carries. Solid, if not the explosive numbers that once made him one of the league's most versatile offensive weapons in San Francisco.
Why did the 49ers need him now?
The move comes a day after San Francisco disclosed that receiver Ricky Pearsall could be out for an extended stretch, and free-agent addition Christian Kirk suffered a calf strain of his own. With the receiver room suddenly thin, a familiar face who already knows Shanahan's offense was an easy call for both sides.
