49ers' De'Zhaun Stribling Out About 10 Weeks After Ankle Surgery; Jake Tonges Done for the Season
Stribling sprained the deltoid ligament in his left ankle against the Rams and goes on injured reserve, while Tonges needs surgery on a torn MCL. KhaDarel Hodge and Brayden Willis were promoted from the practice squad.
San Francisco 49ers receiver De'Zhaun Stribling had surgery on a sprained deltoid ligament in his left ankle and is expected to miss about 10 weeks, coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. Tight end Jake Tonges will have surgery on the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and is out for the season.
How was Stribling hurt?
He was injured late in the first quarter of the 27-7 win over the Rams on a pass intended for tight end Luke Farrell, came back, and re-injured the ankle trying to cut in the second quarter. Shanahan expects him back this year: "We feel good he'll get back this season. It'll take some time."
How thin is the receiver room?
Ricky Pearsall went on injured reserve in camp with a lingering knee problem and won't return this season. Christian Kirk is eligible to come back after Week 4, and Shanahan said he believes Kirk is on track without committing to it. Hodge and Willis were promoted from the practice squad to fill the two roster spots.
