Sean Payton Taking a Bigger Role in Broncos' Play-Calling After Offense Ranks 27th
First-year coordinator Davis Webb keeps the headset to Bo Nix, but Payton will be more active before and during possessions. Denver is 27th in scoring and 29th in rushing through four games.
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton will take a more active role in calling the offense starting Sunday at the Chargers, sources told ESPN. First-year offensive coordinator Davis Webb, who has called the plays through four games, remains the voice in Bo Nix's helmet, with Payton more involved on the headset before and during possessions.
Why the change?
The numbers. Through four games Denver is 27th in scoring and total yards, 29th in rushing, 20th in passing and 30th in explosive plays with 16, and it has gone three-and-out on 27.5 percent of its possessions. Nix's QBR of 46.1 ranks 22nd. "I think our focus needs to be more on the specific and the detail of each play," Payton said, adding that the offense is not playing "championship football" and that the problems are "the details, the little things."
What does it mean for Webb?
He keeps the job and the direct line to Nix, with Payton, who had already been heavily involved in game-planning, now weighing in during games. The 2-2 Broncos face an 0-4 Chargers team that has lost nine straight. Denver is a 66 percent lean in Touchdown Week's prediction for that game.
