DeMeco Ryans Takes Over Texans' Defensive Play-Calling From Matt Burke
Ryans, a former coordinator himself, made the change Wednesday with Houston 0-4 for the first time since 2020. He said it should not be seen as a slight on Burke, who remains coordinator.
Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans will call the defensive plays starting Sunday at Tennessee, taking the job from coordinator Matt Burke. Ryans said the move "shouldn't be viewed as a slight" on Burke, who stays on the staff.
Why now?
Houston is 0-4, its worst start since 2020, after entering the season as an AFC contender. The defense that led the league in yards allowed last season has given up 109 points, and the Texans lost 34-30 to Dallas on Sunday after allowing 397 yards. Ryans built his reputation as San Francisco's defensive coordinator before taking the Houston job.
What happens with Burke?
He remains the defensive coordinator, according to the team, with Ryans handling the game-day calls. The Texans visit the 0-4 Titans on Sunday.
