Cardinals Name Gardner Minshew Their Starter After Overtime Win in Dallas
Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett late in the third quarter and led touchdown drives on all four of his regulation possessions. Brissett, who had started every game, drops to third string.
Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur named Gardner Minshew the starting quarterback on Monday, a day after Minshew came off the bench to lead a 33-30 overtime win at Dallas. Jacoby Brissett, who had started all eight games, moves to third string behind rookie Carson Beck.
What happened Sunday?
Brissett was 10 of 23 for 119 yards and had been sacked four times when Minshew replaced him with 1:35 left in the third quarter and Arizona trailing 17-3. Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns, the Cardinals scored touchdowns on all four of his regulation possessions, and Chad Ryland's 42-yard field goal won it in overtime.
Why make the change?
LaFleur called it a gut decision because the team "needed a spark." He said of Minshew, "He's a competitor, and he's always prepared," and that the decision was "collective." Arizona is 3-5 and plays at Seattle on Sunday.
