Commanders Unveil First Look Inside New RFK-Site Stadium Set to Open in 2030

The roughly 65,000-seat, nearly $4 billion building has a translucent cantilevered roof, a glass facade facing the Capitol and a steep bowl designed to recreate the noise of the old RFK Stadium.

The Washington Commanders released the first renderings of the seating bowl inside their new stadium on the former RFK Stadium site in Washington, D.C., a building scheduled to open in 2030 at a cost approaching $4 billion.

What will it look like?

Designed by HKS, the stadium has a cantilevered translucent roof in the style of U.S. Bank Stadium, a glass facade with views of the U.S. Capitol, and a seating bowl that rises straight up on both sides with minimal overhangs so crowd noise stays in the building. There is a lower-priced "Wall of Fans" section behind one end zone, similar to the Clippers' Intuit Dome, and a section built to bounce, a nod to the original RFK. "Every aspect of the design is intended to amplify the energy and intensity of the crowd," team president Mark Clouse said.

Who is paying?

The Commanders are contributing $2.7 billion and taxpayers about $1.1 billion. The team says the acoustics borrow from Arrowhead Stadium, with the goal of recreating the atmosphere of RFK, home to the franchise from 1961 to 1996 and to its three Super Bowl-winning seasons.
