Why is Strand getting this opportunity?
Penix, still working back from a torn ACL, needs roughly four more weeks before he's cleared for full 11-on-11 work and is currently limited to 7-on-7 drills. Tagovailoa, meanwhile, is dealing with a back issue that head coach Kevin Stefanski has called minor, with a return expected "sooner rather than later." That combination has opened the door for Strand, while newly signed veteran Cooper Rush is still getting acclimated to the offense after joining the team on short notice.

Strand has downplayed the scale of the opportunity, framing it as an extension of his usual preparation. "The mindset doesn't change whether it's 20 or two reps in practice," he said. "I just got to take advantage of those reps and treat those reps like they're game reps because that's the way I get better and the team gets better." Tagovailoa himself praised Strand's offseason work, saying he's "done a really good job this offseason studying, understanding the playbook."
Does this change Atlanta's QB competition?
Not yet - Strand's reps are a product of scheduling and injury more than a formal audition for a bigger role, and the Falcons' actual competition remains between Tagovailoa and Penix once both are healthy. Still, a strong showing gives the undrafted rookie a real chance to make an impression before the veterans return.
