Jaguars' Travis Hunter Feeling Faster Even With Weight Gain

Coming back from season-ending LCL surgery, the two-way standout added 10 pounds of muscle and says he feels lighter on his feet, with a top speed of 23 mph in his sights.

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way standout Travis Hunter has added 10 pounds of muscle heading into training camp and says the extra weight has made him feel lighter on his feet, not slower. Hunter is currently clocking in at 21 to 22.5 miles per hour on the practice field and is hoping to reach 23 as camp progresses.

Wasn't he worried the added weight would slow him down?

Hunter said he initially had concerns that bulking up might hamper his speed, a natural worry for a player whose game is built on burst and change of direction. Those concerns turned out to be unwarranted once he put in the work both on the practice field and in the weight room, and he now says he feels lighter on his feet despite carrying more mass.

Where does his recovery from surgery stand?

Hunter is working back from season-ending LCL surgery and has begun mixing into some team drills at practice, splitting time on defense at cornerback while occasionally lining up on offense at wide receiver. His speed numbers suggest the recovery is progressing well, with some reports indicating he may be running faster than he did at points last season.

What does this mean for Jacksonville?

A healthy, faster version of Hunter capable of playing both sides of the ball gives the Jaguars added flexibility as camp continues. His early returns on speed and conditioning are an encouraging sign for a player the team is counting on to contribute in multiple roles this season.
