Marshall Faulk Reveals Parkinson's Diagnosis

The Hall of Fame running back, now head coach at Southern University, said on a podcast that he has had the disease for about a year and a half, has no cognitive decline, and wants to help others with the condition.

Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk disclosed this week that he has Parkinson's disease. Speaking on The Caring Neurologist podcast with Dr. Sandeep Thakkar, Faulk said he has lived with the diagnosis for about a year and a half. "I want to help as many people as I can," he said.

How was it found?

Faulk said he noticed rigidity in his hand after playing golf and first put it down to nerves while putting. When it happened away from the course too, his doctor sent him for testing. He said medication controls his symptoms apart from hand rigidity and small tremors, that he has had no cognitive decline and feels "clear of thought," and that he does not view the diagnosis as terminal, citing Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox.

What is he doing now?

Coaching. Faulk became head coach at Southern University in November after serving on Deion Sanders' staff at Colorado; Southern is 3-4. He played 12 NFL seasons with the Colts and Rams, won a Super Bowl in St. Louis and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2011, his first year of eligibility.
