Packers Sign Devonte Wyatt to 3-Year, $57 Million Extension
Green Bay keeps its defensive line rebuild rolling, locking up the 2022 first-round pick through 2029 with a $20 million signing bonus despite the ankle injury that ended his 2025 season.
The Green Bay Packers and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt have agreed to a three-year, $57 million contract extension that runs through the 2029 season, ESPN reported. The deal includes a $20 million signing bonus and replaces the $12.94 million Wyatt was scheduled to earn in 2026 on his exercised fifth-year option. It is the latest move in a heavy offseason of trench spending in Green Bay, and it comes even though Wyatt is still working back from a broken fibula and torn ankle ligaments suffered on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions.
Why did Green Bay pay Devonte Wyatt now?
The Packers did not wait to see Wyatt back on the field before committing. He missed all on-field offseason practices while rehabbing the ankle, yet general manager Brian Gutekunst made clear the front office was sold, saying the team really likes him and calling him "very, very impactful, not only in the run game but as a pass rusher as well." The production backs that up. Wyatt had 4 sacks and 7 quarterback hits in just 10 games last season before the injury, and he has 14.5 sacks over his last three years. Extending him a year early also buys cost certainty before the 2022 first-round pick, taken 28th overall, could hit a healthy contract year and drive the price higher.
How does Wyatt fit the Packers' new-look defensive front?
Green Bay expects Wyatt to be a key piece in new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon's 3-4 scheme, a shift from the 4-3 front the Packers ran previously. His profile fits the transition because he can hold up against the run while still generating interior pressure, which is exactly the two-way value Brian Gutekunst highlighted. Wyatt has 16 career sacks and 30 quarterback hits across four seasons, steady interior production that travels between schemes. Wyatt himself sounded eager for the next step, saying he knows he has a lot more in the tank and that the injury "really is going to help me get above this hump." If he returns to his pre-injury pass-rush form, the interior of this front becomes one of the deepest in the league.
What does this mean for Green Bay's loaded defense?
The Wyatt extension is one more brick in a defensive front the Packers have spent all offseason building. Green Bay traded for Micah Parsons, who is rehabbing a torn ACL and targeting an October return, signed veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and linebacker Zaire Franklin, and just extended linebacker Isaiah McDuffie. Pairing Wyatt with Hargrave inside while Parsons works off the edge gives Jonathan Gannon plenty to scheme around once everyone is healthy. The offense is settling in too, with tight end Tucker Kraft expecting to start Week 1 after his own recovery. Locking up Wyatt before camp closes out the core-keeping portion of the offseason and signals the Packers believe this defensive line can carry a contender.
