A Newton, North Carolina native who starred at Newton-Conover High School, Johnson began his college career at Duke in 2021. He earned honorable mention All-ACC honors as a sophomore in 2022 after starting all 13 games with 55 tackles and two interceptions, then was named the Blue Devils' defensive skill player of the year as a junior in 2023.
