A former North Carolina starting quarterback turned NFL linebacker, Chazz Surratt found a permanent home on Seattle's special teams unit and a Super Bowl ring in 2025.

Chazz Surratt began his college career under center at North Carolina before a position switch to linebacker made him an All-American and a third-round NFL draft pick. After stops in Minnesota and with the Jets, a brief run with the 49ers, and a late-2025 signing in Seattle, he re-upped with the Seahawks for 2026 as a core special-teamer.

Path to the league

Surratt started at quarterback for North Carolina before switching to linebacker in the spring of 2019 as Sam Howell took over the offense. The move paid off immediately: he racked up 115 tackles and 6.5 sacks that season and followed with 91 tackles and six sacks in 2020, earning All-American recognition. The Minnesota Vikings selected him in the third round, 78th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

Surratt spent three seasons with the New York Jets after his time in Minnesota, appearing in 32 games with five starts and building a reputation as a reliable special-teams tackler. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers in the 2025 offseason but was released before the season, then joined the Seahawks that August.

2025 season recap

Surratt appeared in games for Seattle down the stretch of their Super Bowl LX-winning season, dealing with a midseason stint on injured reserve for an ankle injury. He contributed primarily on special teams, totaling 11 special-teams tackles across his time with the team, and re-signed with Seattle on a one-year deal in March 2026.
