Danny Gray arrived in the league with track-level speed after a big senior year at SMU, but shoulder and roster-spot troubles have limited him to a bit part ever since. Now with the Eagles, where he's spent time on and off the practice squad, Gray is still chasing his first real NFL opportunity.
Path to the league
Gray began his college career at Blinn College before transferring to SMU, where he broke out as a senior in 2021 with 49 catches for 803 yards and nine touchdowns, earning first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors. The San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round, 105th overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Career highlights
Gray's NFL production has stayed sparse: a single career reception for 10 yards, caught from Josh Johnson in a December 2022 win over Tampa Bay. A shoulder injury wiped out his entire 2023 season on injured reserve in San Francisco before he signed with Philadelphia's practice squad in September 2024 and won a Super Bowl LIX ring with the Eagles.
2025 season recap
Philadelphia waived Gray in late July 2025 during roster cuts. He returned to the Eagles' practice squad that November and signed a reserve/futures contract in January 2026, but he did not see regular-season game action in 2025.
