Michael Taaffe is a safety who authored one of college football's better walk-on-to-star stories at Texas before Miami drafted him in the fifth round in 2026. Undersized and unspectacular athletically by combine standards, he built his reputation on ball production, tackling and leadership on a Longhorns defense that reached the College Football Playoff semifinals twice.
Path to the league
Taaffe began his Texas career as a walk-on special-teamer before earning a scholarship in December 2022 and working into the starting lineup. The Dolphins selected him in the fifth round, No. 158 overall, of the 2026 NFL Draft, acquiring the pick via a trade with the Carolina Panthers.
Career highlights
Over five seasons and 53 games at Texas, Taaffe piled up 222 combined tackles and 14 interceptions. He was a second-team All-American in 2024 with 78 tackles and five interceptions, then capped his career as a first-team All-American and All-SEC honoree in 2025, also winning the Wuerffel Trophy for his combined on-field and community-service excellence.

Taaffe's senior season was the best of his career, earning first-team All-American and All-SEC recognition while serving as a vocal leader of the Texas secondary. He finished with a team-leading seven interceptions and 20 passes defensed over his final three seasons combined, production that pushed him from afterthought to a Day 2 NFL Draft pick.
