An undrafted quarterback out of Southern Miss who has carved out an eight-year NFL career as a steady backup and occasional starter.
Nick Mullens has bounced through six organizations since going undrafted in 2017, building a reputation as a reliable arm teams trust to step in when a starter goes down. He now holds down the backup job in Jacksonville, a role he has settled into after stops in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Las Vegas and Minnesota.
Path to the league
Mullens started 41 games over four seasons at Southern Miss from 2013-16, throwing for nearly 12,000 yards and 87 touchdowns. He was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year in 2015 after setting single-season school records for passing yards (4,476) and touchdown passes (38), but he went unselected in the 2017 NFL Draft and signed with the 49ers as a free agent.
Career highlights
Mullens made 16 starts for San Francisco from 2018-2020, filling in behind an often-injured Jimmy Garoppolo, and later saw action with the Eagles, Browns, Raiders and Vikings. For his career he has completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 6,448 yards, 34 touchdowns and 31 interceptions across 808 attempts.
2025 season recap
Jacksonville signed Mullens in March 2025, and he won the backup quarterback job behind the Jaguars' starter, holding it through the full season. His action was limited to five game appearances and 36 offensive snaps, completing all three of his pass attempts for 19 yards.
