A former high school basketball player who never suited up for football until college, then turned into a Division III All-American and the Titans' most talked-about undrafted signing.
Tyren Montgomery didn't play a single down of football in high school, choosing basketball instead, but a winding college path through LSU, Houston and Nicholls State eventually led him to Division III John Carroll, where he became one of the most productive receivers in the country. The Tennessee Titans signed him as an undrafted free agent after a standout audition at the 2026 Senior Bowl.
Path to the league
A Columbus, Ohio native raised in The Woodlands, Texas, Montgomery captained his high school basketball team and did not play organized football until college. After stops at LSU and Houston, he landed at FCS Nicholls State, sitting out 2022 before catching 12 passes for 171 yards in 2023.
Career highlights
Montgomery transferred to Division III John Carroll in 2024 and immediately broke out, catching 57 passes for 1,071 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns while earning first-team All-OAC honors and OAC Wide Receiver of the Year. He became the only Division III player invited to both the American Bowl and the 2026 Senior Bowl, where his performance against higher-level competition raised his draft profile.
2025 season recap
In his final college season, Montgomery caught 119 passes for 1,528 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging over 109 receiving yards per game and earning consensus Division III All-American honors. He went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft but signed with the Tennessee Titans, who have an existing pipeline to John Carroll through assistant general manager Dave Ziegler, an alumnus of the school.
