Mike Evans Is Already at Home in San Francisco

The veteran receiver left Tampa Bay in free agency, and the 49ers say he has slotted into their offense without missing a beat.

For the first time in his professional life, Mike Evans is preparing for a season in something other than a Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniform. The 32-year-old receiver signed with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency this offseason after 12 years in Tampa, and by every account from inside the building, the transition has been seamless. Evans has been a regular presence in the 49ers offseason program, building chemistry with quarterback Brock Purdy and taking younger receivers under his wing along the way. For a team that has weathered a rough stretch, adding a proven veteran with a Hall of Fame resume is exactly the kind of steadying move Kyle Shanahan's group needed.

How did Mike Evans end up with the 49ers?

Evans reached San Francisco through free agency rather than a trade. After 12 seasons with the Buccaneers, the only franchise he had ever known, he signed with the 49ers this offseason. In Tampa Bay he built one of the most consistent resumes at his position, earning six Pro Bowl selections and two second-team All-Pro nods. His arrival gives Kyle Shanahan a legitimate outside threat and a locker-room presence that a young receiver room can lean on. It also marks a rare sight for the NFL, watching a career-long Buccaneer suit up somewhere else.

What about his record streak of 1,000-yard seasons?

Evans put together an NFL record-tying run of 11 consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards, a stretch of durability and production almost unheard of at wide receiver. The streak came to a halt in 2025, when a broken clavicle sidelined him and pushed him to career lows across several categories. Rather than dwell on the injury, Evans has framed the layoff as a positive heading into his 49ers debut. "I look at that injury as a blessing in disguise because I'm feeling really fresh," he said. At 32, a lighter workload in his final Tampa season may leave him with more left in the tank than most receivers his age.

How is he fitting with Brock Purdy and the offense?

By all indications, the fit has been natural. Evans has been an active participant throughout the offseason program, working closely with Brock Purdy and mentoring the 49ers younger pass catchers. Coaches have pointed to his competitive intensity as a standard for the rest of the group to match. Teammates have not hidden their excitement about having him around. "Every single day that I see Mike, I just go, 'Wow, Mike Evans is here,'" tight end George Kittle said, while left tackle Trent Williams added, "Mike Evans is a Hall of Fame player. Having another one of them on our team means a lot." For a 49ers team looking to reset, that kind of veteran presence carries weight well beyond the box score.
