Chiefs Unveil Renderings of $3 Billion Domed Stadium in Kansas

The Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday unveiled renderings of a planned $3 billion domed stadium in Wyandotte County, Kansas, a project designed by Kansas City-based architecture firm MANICA and scheduled to open for the 2031 NFL season. The 70,000-seat venue would move the franchise across the state line and position Kansas City to chase the biggest events in sports. "This new stadium will do just that. It's spectacular. It honors the rich legacy of this franchise while setting a bold course for the future of Chiefs Kingdom," chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said.
What will the new Chiefs stadium look like?
The renderings show a fully enclosed dome with translucent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene ceiling panels, letting natural light into the building while protecting fans from the elements. The exterior features a symmetrical curved shape, and the scalloped upper decks are a deliberate nod to the look of Arrowhead Stadium. Inside, the seating bowl is designed to feel similar to the one Chiefs fans know today. The plans also call for more than 20,000 parking spots to preserve the tailgating culture, a hall of honor twice the size of the current one, a team store four times larger and expanded luxury suites. Clark Hunt said the goal from the beginning has been to improve the gameday experience for every single fan.
How would the $3 billion project be funded?
The financing plan leans heavily on Kansas STAR bonds, which would cover up to 70 percent of the cost of the stadium and a surrounding mixed-use district. On top of that public financing mechanism, the Hunt family is committing $1 billion in additional development. A specific site in Wyandotte County has not yet been decided, though areas near Kansas Speedway and The Legends retail and entertainment district have previously been under consideration. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has been part of the process as the state works to land the franchise.
What happens to Arrowhead Stadium and the Missouri side?
The move would end the Chiefs' long run at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the most storied venues in the sport, though the team has not detailed what becomes of the building itself. The design team clearly wants continuity, borrowing Arrowhead's scalloped deck lines and familiar bowl feel for the new dome. Stadium fights across state lines have become a defining story of this NFL era, from the Bears' drawn-out saga in Illinois and the bid from Hammond, Indiana, to this push by Kansas to pull the Chiefs out of Missouri. For a franchise that just locked in Patrick Mahomes through 2033 on a reworked deal, the new building would be the other half of a decades-long foundation.
What events could the new dome attract?
A climate-controlled dome changes what Kansas City can host, and the Chiefs are not being shy about it. The organization plans to bid on Super Bowls, Final Fours, College Football Playoff games and World Cup matches beginning in 2032, the year after the building is scheduled to open. Clark Hunt said the field will be designed so that no retrofitting is needed when the World Cup returns to America in 25 or 30 years. "I've been thrilled with what I've seen. It's very, very exciting. Our fanbase is going to get an incredible stadium," Hunt said.
