Jayden Daniels Takes Blame for Botched Final Play as Commanders and Giants Tie 27-27

With eight seconds left in overtime and no timeouts, Daniels tucked the ball and was tackled, and the clock ran out before a 42-yard field goal attempt. Dan Quinn said the responsibility was his.

The Washington Commanders had the ball at the Giants' 24 with 50 seconds left in overtime Sunday and did not get a field goal attempt off. Jayden Daniels, in his first game back from a dislocated elbow, snapped the ball with 12 seconds left on a play meant to be a throw to Ben Sinnott, tucked it and was tackled for no gain, and the game ended 27-27.

What went wrong?

Washington had no timeouts, and the play call was for yards the team did not need. "We have to stop the clock," Daniels said. "Ultimately, it's on me." Dan Quinn disagreed about who owned it: "That has to come from me." He said Sinnott should not have been put in that position and that the staff had not told Daniels to spike it, even though the team practices end-of-game situations every Thursday. Drew Stevens would have had a 42-yard attempt.

How did Daniels look?

He ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 199 without a turnover in his return from the Week 2 elbow dislocation, including three completions and a 16-yard scramble on the last drive. Jameis Winston threw 54 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns for New York, the last a 17-yarder to Malik Nabers that tied it in the fourth quarter. Washington is 1-3-1 and plays at San Francisco on Monday night in Week 6.
