Falcons' Michael Penix Jr. Hurts Rib Late, Tagovailoa's Overtime Interception Ends Loss to Ravens
Penix stayed down after a sack with 27 seconds left in a tied game, came back for a punt, and could not return in overtime as the pain worsened on the bench. He expects to be ready next week.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. injured a rib on a sack by Tavius Robinson with 27 seconds left in regulation of Sunday night's 30-23 overtime loss to Baltimore and did not play in the extra period. "Knowing me, I'm going to be ready to go next week," Penix said.
What happened at the end?
Tua Tagovailoa came in for one play, Penix returned for the next snap and Atlanta punted. Baltimore then drove 14 plays in overtime while Penix sat and stiffened; he said he probably would have gone back in had the Falcons received first, but "I just felt like I needed to be out there" and the pain got worse as he cooled down. Tagovailoa took over and threw an interception to Kyle Hamilton with 2:11 left that ended the game.
How had Penix played?
Nineteen of 32 for 240 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Since his return from his third ACL surgery, Atlanta has scored 80 points in two wins and 23 in Sunday's loss. The Falcons are 2-3.
