Giants Extend Jameis Winston and Jon Runyan Ahead of Season Opener
Winston gets a two-year, $13 million deal to stay as Jaxson Dart's backup, while starting left guard Runyan signs a two-year, $22 million extension with $21.5 million guaranteed.
The New York Giants agreed to two-year contract extensions with backup quarterback Jameis Winston and starting left guard Jon Runyan on Saturday, a week before John Harbaugh's first game as head coach. Winston's deal is worth $13 million and runs through 2028; Runyan's is worth $22 million with $21.5 million guaranteed, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan and Adam Schefter.
Why pay a backup quarterback now?
Winston, 32, is the contingency behind second-year starter Jaxson Dart, who has dealt with injuries and sat out the entire preseason. "When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team," Winston said. Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. called him "a great leader" who supports every level of the quarterback room.
What does Runyan's deal mean for the line?
Runyan starts at left guard on a line that returns four starters, and the near-fully guaranteed structure locks in that continuity through 2028. The Giants also drafted tackle Francis Mauigoa in the first round this spring.
