A speedy Detroit native and former Michigan standout, Ambry Thomas has fought to reestablish himself after a broken forearm derailed his 49ers tenure.
Ambry Thomas arrived in the NFL as a third-round pick with elite recovery speed, spending three seasons as a rotational cornerback in San Francisco. A serious forearm injury wiped out his 2024 season and cost him his roster spot, and he has spent the time since fighting for a foothold, most recently landing with the Eagles.
Path to the league
Thomas starred at Michigan, where as a junior in 2019 he posted three interceptions, three passes defensed and 38 tackles before opting out of the shortened 2020 season. His timed speed, a 4.37-second 40-yard dash at 6-foot, 191 pounds, helped the San Francisco 49ers select him 102nd overall in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Career highlights
Thomas played three seasons in San Francisco, appearing in 42 games with 11 starts and recording two interceptions, 12 passes defensed, a forced fumble and 79 tackles. A fractured right forearm wiped out his entire 2024 season, after which the 49ers released him.
2025 season recap
Thomas signed a futures deal with the Minnesota Vikings in early 2025 but was waived at the end of training camp in August. He caught on with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad shortly after, spending much of the season working to earn his way back onto an active roster.
