Jonathan Owens is a veteran safety who signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2026 after a Division II path to the NFL.

Owens joined the Colts in March 2026 on a one-year deal, continuing a journeyman career that began as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western State. The Division II product has carved out a long NFL run on the strength of his special-teams value and depth contributions at safety. He is entering his ninth season in the league.

Path to the league

Owens played college football at Missouri Western State, a Division II program, where he appeared in 43 games with 33 starts and recorded 259 tackles and seven interceptions. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He has since played for the Texans, Packers, Bears and now the Colts.

Career highlights

Owens has built a durable NFL career from a Division II background, spending time with Houston from 2019 to 2022, Green Bay in 2023 and Chicago in 2024 and 2025. He has been a steady contributor on defense and special teams. In March 2026 he signed a one-year contract with Indianapolis.

2025 season

Owens played in all 17 regular-season games and both postseason games for the Chicago Bears in 2025. He contributed as a depth safety and special-teams player. He signed with the Colts in the following offseason and is expected to compete for a role in the secondary and on special teams.
