T.J. Maguranyanga is a defensive end whose path to Washington started thousands of miles away on a rugby pitch in France. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, he spent years as a professional rugby player before making the leap to American football through the NFL's International Player Pathway program.
Path to the league
Maguranyanga played rugby union professionally as a wing for ASM Clermont Auvergne in France's Top 14 league from 2020 to 2024 before joining the NFL's International Player Pathway program in December 2024. He spent months learning the fundamentals of American football at development camps at IMG Academy in Florida before the Commanders signed him in April 2025.
