Former Saints first-round tackle now anchoring the Chargers offensive line after a 2025 move and a 2026 re-signing.
Trevor Penning is an offensive lineman who played college football at Northern Iowa and was a 2022 first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints. He landed with the Los Angeles Chargers and re-signed there in March 2026 on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million. Penning has shifted between tackle and guard in the pros.
Path to the league
Penning started all 12 games at left tackle in his final Northern Iowa season and was the only offensive lineman named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the FCS National Offensive Player of the Year. He became the first Northern Iowa player drafted in the first round. The Saints selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Career highlights
Penning spent his first NFL seasons in New Orleans before joining the Chargers, who acquired him to help a struggling offensive line. Los Angeles re-signed him in free agency in March 2026 on a one-year, $4.5 million contract.
