Preseason Week 2: Injury-Depleted 49ers Visit Chargers

Read the full recap →

The San Francisco 49ers travel to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday, August 20, banged up across multiple position groups. Guard Dominick Puni is in concussion protocol, defensive tackle Gracen Halton and defensive end Titus Leo are dealing with injuries from the same practice, and quarterback Kurtis Rourke remains out after a breathing issue in the opener. Los Angeles has its own concern after receiver Mike Evans was pulled from practice with his quad wrapped in ice.

49ers' injury list keeps growing

Between Puni, Halton, Leo and receiver Demarcus Robinson's undisclosed issue, San Francisco is short-handed across both lines heading into this game.

Evans' quad is a real question for L.A.

Evans already missed 12 days of camp earlier this summer with a quad strain, so the Chargers will be cautious about pushing him back too quickly.

Kittle and Williams updates still pending

Coach Kyle Shanahan is expected to clarify which starters play, including updates on tight end George Kittle's practice return and defensive lineman Mykel Williams.

How the prediction did

Predicted 16-20 (49ers vs Chargers), final was 41-17. San Francisco routed Los Angeles 41-17, overcoming its injury list behind a Jacob Cowing punt-return touchdown, one of the model's bigger misses of the week.

San Francisco's injury list is the deciding factor

With multiple starters banged up across both lines and at quarterback, the 49ers have less healthy talent to work with than a Chargers team managing a single notable issue in Evans.

Home field adds a modest boost for Los Angeles

Playing at home against a shorthanded opponent should make it easier for the Chargers to control the game.

Evans' status could still shift the picture

If the Chargers hold him out entirely, the gap between the two rosters narrows, keeping this projection short of high confidence.

This is a preseason exhibition, but San Francisco's unusually deep injury list across multiple position groups pushes this projection's confidence above a typical Week 2 game.
