A former Texas running back turned receiver who has settled into a versatile reserve role for the Rams.

Jordan Whittington overcame a run of college injuries at Texas to reinvent himself as a receiver, and the Rams took him in the sixth round of the 2024 draft banking on that versatility. Two seasons in, he has become a jack-of-all-trades option for Sean McVay, catching passes, returning kicks and even taking the occasional handoff.

Path to the league

Whittington began his Texas career at running back before shifting to receiver, battling injuries in his early seasons before becoming a reliable contributor for the Longhorns. In his final season he caught 42 passes for 501 yards and a touchdown and earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 recognition. The Rams selected him in the sixth round (213th overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Career highlights

As a rookie, Whittington ranked second among all rookie receivers with at least 10 targets in yards per route run, a strong efficiency showing given his limited target share behind Los Angeles' top wideouts. His background as a college running back has also made him a useful gadget piece, taking occasional carries out of the backfield.

2025 season recap

Whittington played all 17 regular-season games in 2025, catching 18 passes for 171 yards on 25 targets while also returning 17 kickoffs for 434 yards and carrying three times for 12 yards. He dealt with a knee injury ahead of the Rams' divisional-round playoff game and later suffered a chest injury in the NFC Championship loss to Seattle, though he was able to return to action in the fourth quarter of that game.
