Trey Benson entered the league as a home-run threat out of the backfield, pairing 4.39 speed with a bruising running style. He has flashed that potential in flashes for the Cardinals, but injuries have kept him from stringing together a full, healthy season.

Path to the league

Benson began his college career at Oregon in 2021 before transferring to Florida State, where he rushed for 990 yards in 2022 and 906 yards in 2023. He ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Combine, and the Arizona Cardinals selected him in the third round (No. 66 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft, the fifth Florida State player taken that year.

Career highlights

Over his first two NFL seasons, Benson carried the ball 92 times for 451 yards and a touchdown while adding 19 receptions for 123 yards, working primarily as a change-of-pace back behind Arizona's starter. His combination of size and speed has made him a factor in short-yardage and explosive-play situations when healthy.

2025 season recap

Benson opened the 2025 season strong, rushing for a career-high 69 yards on eight carries, including a 52-yard run, the longest season-opening rush by a Cardinal since 2000. But his season was cut short by injury after just four games (one start), finishing with 160 yards on 29 carries and 13 catches for 123 yards before landing on injured reserve.
