A former Montana State walk-on who fought through years of practice-squad stints to become a starting safety on a Super Bowl-winning Seahawks team.

Ty Okada is a Seattle safety whose journey started as a walk-on quarterback in Minnesota and wound through the FCS ranks at Montana State before he finally cracked an NFL roster. Undrafted in 2023, he spent two years bouncing on and off Seattle's practice squad before breaking through as a starter in 2025.

Path to the league

Okada grew up in Woodbury, Minnesota, and was a team captain and All-District quarterback at East Ridge High School before walking on at Montana State. He redshirted his first year, moved to safety, and helped lead the Bobcats to the FCS National Championship Game as a redshirt junior, when he was named second-team All-Big Sky. He went undrafted in 2023 and signed with the Seahawks as a free agent.

Career highlights

As a redshirt junior at Montana State, Okada recorded 78 tackles, six tackles for loss, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. He repeated as second-team All-Big Sky as a redshirt senior with 73 tackles, three sacks, an interception and a blocked punt. After going undrafted, he spent his first two NFL seasons cycling through Seattle's practice squad before making the 53-man roster.

2025 season recap

Okada broke through in 2025, playing 17 games with 11 starts at safety after injuries opened opportunities in Seattle's secondary. He finished with 65 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, an interception and six pass deflections, then added two tackles across three postseason games as the Seahawks won Super Bowl LX.
