Week 2: Drew Lock Starts for Seahawks at the Surprising Cardinals

Read the full recap →

The Seattle Seahawks visit the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, September 20, with Drew Lock starting in place of Sam Darnold, who is out with a soft-tissue injury in his right glute the team says is not long term. Lock went 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a touchdown in relief in the 13-10 win over New England. Arizona opened with the week's biggest upset, beating the Chargers 26-14 as Jacoby Brissett threw for 277 yards, Trey McBride caught nine passes and No. 3 pick Jeremiyah Love scored on his first drive. The line opened at Seattle by 10 and has come down to 4.5 since Darnold's injury and Arizona's win.

Lock's first start since 2024

He was efficient in relief against New England, and Seattle's defense held Drake Maye to 178 yards with three interceptions, so the bar for the offense is modest.

Arizona's opener was more than a fluke

The Cardinals held the ball for more than 37 minutes, outgained the Chargers 393-268, blocked a punt and forced two turnovers.

Rest edge to Seattle

The Seahawks played on Wednesday night and have had 11 days; Arizona is on a normal week and indoors at home.

How the prediction did

Predicted 23-20 (Seahawks vs Cardinals), final was 31-7. Right winner at Low confidence, and the model badly undersold it. Drew Lock threw three touchdown passes in place of Sam Darnold, all to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, including an 82-yarder on the opening drive, and Seattle held Arizona to 151 yards. The margin was 24 against a projected 3.

Seattle's defense is the best unit in the game

Three interceptions of Maye and 10 points allowed; Brissett is efficient but not explosive, which suits a defense-first plan.

The Cardinals' opener was built on possession and turnovers

That formula is repeatable against a backup quarterback, which is why the pick stays close.

Lock is the swing factor

One good half of relief is a thin sample for a full road start; the model treats this as a coin flip leaning Seattle.

The champions get a narrow lean on defense and rest. If Lock struggles early, Arizona's ball-control approach is well suited to a low-scoring upset.
